Odometer mileage and amount of gas at each fill up is needed to figure MPG.

The basic information required is the Year and Model of car and engine type. Carburetor (or fuel injection), exhaust, transmission, axle ratio and tire size improve comparisons.  Driving conditions (climate, speed, loads) help readers compare the variables.
