BAY BRIDGE AUTO (GM), Oakland, CA (Formerly Connell Motor Co/ became Bay City Chev)

Bay Bridge Auto was a General Motors dealership occupying the site of Connell Motor Company. General Motors rescinded the franchise and Bay Bridge Auto closed in 2010. The location became host to Bay City Chevrolet in 2011.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

BAY BRIDGE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE, Oakland, CA

Bay Bridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge was located at 2735 Broadway, Oakland, California. The owner was Bobby Ali. This was one of the dealers on Chrysler's list of 789 dealers to purge before June 9, 2009 during its bankruptcy re organization. Bay Bridge is owned by the the same group running Bay City Chevrolet. Both these locations were formerly Connell locations.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

BAY CITY CHEVROLET, Oakland, CA/ (Formerly Connell Chev-Olds/ Bay Bridge Auto)

dealer bay city chevrolet oakland ca

Bay City Chevrolet is located at the north end of 'dealer's row' at 3093 Broadway, Oakland, California on the former Connell GM dealership location. The showroom sits on Broadway and continues back up the hill on Hawthorne towards the service area. Bay Bridge Auto continued the Connell Motor Company franchise until GM rescinded it in 2010. Bay City replaced it on the same location in 2011. Bay City also owned Bay Bridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge which was a former Connell holding named Connell Jeep Chrysler Plymouth.

In winter, 2012 Bay City had 155 new Chevys on the lot. The breakdown is slanted more towards cars with a refreshing emphasis towards greater ponycar representation than most dealers usually stock. Bay City has 39 new Camaros which makes them the second most numerous model carried behind a slew of new Malibus (53). In a significant departure from the national trend, Bay City only carries a few trucks and SUVs. Maybe people are finally getting back into cars. The Bay Area has historically favored smaller cars and has had a long standing soft spot for foreign cars.

Bay City also has 54 used cars on the lot. Among the collection of used Impalas and Malibus there was one used Camaro. It was a 2012 black LT Coupe with 12,994 miles showing as of Feb, 2013. Price was $24,995.00, VIN 2G1FB1E38C9196480. They also had the rival ponycar represented with one Satin Silver 2005 Mustang Premium V6 4.0 L convertible on site, VIN 1ZVFT84NX55221490. Considering it is the 'new' model Mustang and a convertible the price isn't bad: $13,995.00. On the downside it has 93,619 miles when it came in. It now has 93,709.

Right out front of the showroom they had a nice new 2013 Camaro 2LT. The deeper shade of red used is named Crystal Red Metallic Tincoat. The interior is black. VIN number is 2GIFC1E3XD9129488.

dealer bay city chev oakland ca 2013 camaro 2lt

The Crystal Red Metallic Tincoat Camaro final assembly occurred in Oshawa, Ontario with a Canadian built 3.6 L SIDI V6 engine and USA built six speed automatic transmission. Despite decent performance the EPA got 18 City MPG/ 27 Hwy MPG and an average of 21. The Camaro is a transfer. It was originally delivered to Winter Chevrolet, Pittsburg, California.

The base vehicle is $28,685.00 plus the RS option ($1,375.00) which adds HID lights, 20" painted aluminum wheels and summer performance tires. The automatic transmission option with tap shift and remote start cost $1,185.00. To switch the RS 20" wheels to polished aluminum was a $470.00 option, but you get to retain the performance tires from the RS option. It's $325.00 extra for the optional paint job. Dealer installed premium carpeted floor mats ($155.00) and cargo mat ($140.00) and a real spare tire and wheel (compact) replacing the tire sealant kit ($150.00) takes the total options to $3,800.00. Destination ($900.00) gets the MSRP up to $33,385.00.

Bay City Chevrolet didn't have any Corvettes on the lot but they did have some SS Camaros. The big haymaker of a punch on the lot is a Black with black interior 2012 Camaro ZL1. The 6.2 L supercharged beast puts 580 HP through an automatic into a 3.73 rear axle. VIN 2G1FJ1EP3C9800801 and the price is $60,194.00.

Unlike the Black ZL1 with black interior manual shift ZL1 shown below from the F. H. Dailey Chevrolet stock, the Bay City ZL1 is a bit more sinister looking without the bright aluminum wheels. The Bay City Chev one has black 10 spoke forged aluminum wheels which simply put are insanely huge: 20" x 10" front and 20" x 11" rear. The summer performance tires are almost absurdly huge, too: 285/35ZR20 front and 305/35ZR20 rear. The automatic ZL1 has the same EPA rating as the manual- both are slapped with a gas guzzler tax.

In 2014 Bay City Chevrolet was closed down.

dealer bill cox cadillac oakland ca license frame

Bill Cox Cadillac was located on 216-30 Bay Place at 2500-42 Harrison Street, Oakland, California. This location was originally the site of Don Lee Cadillac.

Don Lee Cadillac originated in San Francisco, California and was successful enough to warrant a satellite dealership in Oakland. Don Lee chose the former Piedmont Consolidated Cable Company building as the site of his new Cadillac showroom in Oakland. This 1890 building was formerly the powerhouse and car barn for Oakland's cable car line. The building sat at the midpoint of the cable car tracks running from downtown Oakland up Oakland Avenue to Piedmont. The building relied on coal-fed boilers to power dynamos that drove the cables. Electrified streetcars rendered the building obsolete. Local architect Clay Burrell converted the remnants of the former car barn and powerhouse into the Lee Cadillac showroom.

After Don Lee Cadillac left the building it became home to Cox Cadillac. In the final years as a car dealership Bill Cox Cadillac and Bill Cox Buick operated here. .

The Cadillac Showroom was designated as an Oakland Landmark on April 9, 2002, A new development was built around the original building. Whole Foods Market opened in this location September 26, 2007.

He owned and ran Cirimele Ford until selling in 1970. He worked for a bank retiring in 1973. He came out of retirement in 1983 to run Martin-Johnson Porsche Audi in Oakland when the owner died. Both generations of the Negherbon Lincoln Mercury family had close ties with Frank based on the close proximity of their dealerships along dealer row in the 1950s and 1960s. Frank eventually retired again enjoying some quiet before his death on May 13, 2006.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

CONNELL MOTOR CO (GM) Oakland, CA/ closed- (dealership location is now Bay City Chevrolet)

dealer-2003-connel-dealer-oak-ca

Connell Motor Company was located on the north end of dealer's row in Oakland, California at 3093 Broadway. A plaque on the dealership wall notes that this was the former location of St. Mary's College. Several other schools were located in this general area in the first decade of the 1900s when it was known as 'Academy Hill'.

'Academy Hill' underwent radical changes in 1912. Oakland's auto row was focused on 12th Street in downtown Oakland but needed room to grow and expanded into this area of Broadway. Repair shops and auto parts dealers migrated into this area. The first dealership to be built in 'Acadamy Hill' was Howard Buick. Howard's building was erected in 1914 right across the street from St Mary's College.

Connell Motor Company had established itself as the second largest Oldsmobile dealer in the USA by the 1940s and needed more room. St. Mary's College was razed in 1928 and its absence created an opportunity for Connell to move into this 3.4 acre spot across from Howard Buick.

A Streamline Moderne auto showroom, offices and repair facility were built here for Connell Motor Company. The showroom sits on Broadway and continues back up the hill on Hawthorne towards the service area. The rest of the property was paved for inventory display and storage. The building was designed by Albin Froberg and was completed in 1947.

Al 'A. J.' Connell owned the business. Al loved the racetrack. He bet on the horses regularly. It was routine for him to fly to Los Angeles, California where he placed bets at the track in Santa Anita for the day. A.J. also logged time at Golden Gate Fields in Albany California.

A. J.'s book keeper and private secretary Mrs. Linden managed all of his personal affairs aside from keeping the books for him. In one of those dealership connections that pop up so often, Mrs. Linden's son Gordon Linden was the saxophone player in the same high school band Michael White was in. Micheal's father owned Gough Chrysler Plymouth in San Francisco.

Michael recalls that roughly in the 1970's that A. J. sold a percentage of the business to Dean Weaver who was General Manager. When Al passed away he left quite a bit of his estate to Mrs. Linden. Gordon Linden now lives in the home that Al owned in Piedmont, California.

Around 2008 Connell was taken over and renamed Bay Bridge Auto. Bay Bridge was closed down by General Motors when they rescinded the franchise in 2010. In 2011 Bay City Chevrolet opened up in the same location and lasted until 2014.

To see the stories about a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and a 1969 Oldsmobile 442 bought new off this lot see the ONE OWNER section of the CAR STORIES on this website.

Below is the business card of the salesman who sold Miss J her 1969 Olds 442.

After the dealership closed down the building was taken over by Bay Bridge Auto and then Bay City Chevrolet. The original Streamline Moderne building was retained with a facelift. The same owners also took over the Connell Jeep Chrysler Plymouth dealership renaming it Bay Bridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge. The city of Oakland is looking into retaining some of the historic features of the Connell building and incorporating them into a new development.

DAHL CHEVROLET COMPANY, Oakland, CA

Dahl Chevrolet Company was located on dealer row at Broadway and 27th in Oakland, California.

F H DAILEY MOTOR CO, Oakland, CA (1910)

(moved to San Leandro, CA as F H DAILEY CHEVROLET/ 866-627-6817)

Frank Henry Dailey established F H Dailey Company in 1910. As the focus of the business narrowed to automobiles, the name was revised to F H Dailey Motor Company. In 1912 a new car showroom opened at 2130 Broadway in Oakland which is part of the still standing 'auto row'. After a brief stint selling Reo and Maxwell cars, F H settled on Chevrolet.

The second generation owner C. F. 'Bud' Dailey co-owned the business with Don Gotto. They moved F H Dailey Motor Co to 4117 East 14th Street at 41st Avenue in East Oakland, California.

A third move took F H Dailey Chevrolet to the present location at 800 Davis Street, San Leandro, California. They have a second location at 900 Marina Boulevard, also in San Leandro. Dealer code is 06190.

The F H Dailey Motor Co 800 Davis location is shown above. The entrance is sprinkled with a few Corvettes that definitely get some attention.  They currently have four new 2013 Corvettes in stock out of 204 new cars. There are 74 used cars on the lot. The third generation of the Dailey family currently owns the dealership.

dealer f h dailey san leandro davis st vettes

March, 2002 a second location was opened on a new 'dealer row' created on Marina Blvd named the 'Marina Auto Mall'. The showroom of the new satellite lot is shown below.

On the corner of the Marina lot they had this hot looking 2012 Camaro 2SS black convertible.

The 6.2 L SFI engine is running through a 6 speed automatic which gives 15 City MPG/ 24 Hwy MPG and a combined total of 18 MPG. The VIN is 2G1FK3DJ8C9208333

F H Dailey pulled out all the stops when they sent a couple of cars down to the 19th Annual Alameda Classic Car Show held Oct 13, 2012. This 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition below is VIN IGIYY3DE2D5700204. It proudly displays the engine badges on either side of the classic hood bulge.

2013 corvette 427 conv f h dailey alamadea carshow

The Cyber Gray Metallic Corvette with carbon fiber hood and fenders cranks an astounding 505 net HP out of the dry sump 427 (7.0 L) engine channeled through a six speed manual transmission. The old legendary 427 engine produced less HP using the 1960s gross rating system and delivered less fuel mileage doing it. The current Vette manages to squeeze 15 City MPG/ 24 Hwy MPG and an overall average of 18 MPG measured using the up to date more realistic modern EPA rating system.

2013 corvette 427 f h dailey alameda show ls7

The handling on this modern Vette is light years away from the old nose heavy 427s of the past. The 2013 comes with power, speed sensitive rack and pinion variable ratio steering, traction control, active handling, magnetic ride control, tire pressure monitor and run flat tires with four wheel ABS disc brakes.

2013 corvette 427 f h dailey alameda show ebony int

The amenities on the 2013 Vette run on for pages: airbags, dual zone climate control A/C, inside rear view mirror, auto dimming, compass, cruise control, programmable power door locks, keyless entry, rear defrost, theft deterrent, OnStar, six way power leather driver seat, power windows, tilt leather wrapped wheel with steering wheel mounted controls, head up display, trunk convenience net, Sirius, navigation, AM/FM stereo with CD Bose w/ 9 speakers, Bluetooth for phone, power heated outside mirrors, Xenon high intensity lights, daytime running lamps, fog lamps. When you look at the incredible performance and comfort $75,925.00 doesn't sound out of line.

Now here come the options. $6,000.00 for the ISB package: memory package, seat adjusters power bolster and power lumbar, leather seats, power convertible top, heated seats, tilt and telescoping column, universal home remote. The 427 Heritage Package is $1,195.00, the red calipers are $595.00 and another $495.00 for black lightweight aluminum wheels 19"x 10" front and 20"x 10" rear. $975.00 destination brings the MSRP to $85,185.00.

2013 corvette 427 conv f h dailey alameda show rear

The second exciting car F H Dailey brought to the show is this 2013 Camaro ZL1 Black coupe with black interior. The VIN is 2G1FZ1EPOD9801446.

2013 camaro zl1 f h dailey alameda show

The Camaro packs a 6.2 L supercharged V8 pumping power through a six speed manual transmission and limited slip differential. It's interesting to note that the supercharged engine only rates 14 City MPG/ 19 Hwy MPG for an overall average of 16 MPG which is less efficient than the larger 427 Corvette engine described in the paragraph above. In fact this is one of the rare modern domestic performance cars hit with a gas guzzler tax ($1,300.00).

dealer 2013 camaro zl1 f h dailey alameda show 62 l

The Camaro has dual mode performance exhaust, Brembo performance brakes, power electric steering, magnetic ride control, Stabiltrak, four wheel ABS discs and auxiliary gauges with boost readout for the supercharger. The photo below captures the cool hood scoops in the raised hood. This is a carbon fiber weave insert option that costs $600.00. The other option on this car is the 20" forged bright aluminum wheels ($470.00). With destination the MSRP is $57,620.00.

Many of the ZL1 special features were Corvette exclusives in past years such as magnetic ride control, Head Up display, electric steering assist etc.

dealer melrose ford oakland ca license frame

Melrose Ford was located at 1050 International Boulevard, Oakland, California. International Blvd used to be known as East 14th Street. The dealership was owned Jim Di Bari and was formerly Melrose Motors Inc. The long standing Chrysler Plymouth franchise changed to a Ford dealership in time to showcase the new 1972 model Fords. The dealership continued to sponsor racecars although they were now Fords.

A real estate listing from 2006 when the newly vacated dealership property was put up for sale states that the building is about 28,500 sq. ft. and the paved lot is around 32,400 sq. ft.

It seems to be a coincidence that the highly regarded independent repair shop Melrose Motors at 358 10th Street, San Francisco has a similar name. Melrose Motors was established August, 1985 under the ownership of Roger Barrenech.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MELROSE MOTORS INC (Chrysler Plymouth), Oakland, CA (drag sponsor Melrose Missile/ see Melrose Ford)

The Melrose Auto Service portion of the business was an official State light and brake station during the 1960s.

The dealership made a name for itself with drag racing sponsorship in the 1960s. The Melrose Missile was the name given to the various Plymouth race cars driven by Tom Grove. Tom Grove was a 28 year old mechanic working in the dealership who won Mr. Top Stock Eliminator in 1964 at the 4th annual Winternationals in Pomona, CA with an 11.63 elapsed quarter mile time. This particular Melrose Missile was the fifth version and named Melrose Missile V. The Missile appeared first in Max Wedge and later Hemi form. Tom began driving for Melrose Motors in June, 1962.

Melrose Motors Inc switched to a Ford franchise in time for the introduction of the 1972 models and continued to race although now with Ford cars.

It seems to be a coincidence that the highly regarded independent repair shop Melrose Motors at 358 10th Street, San Francisco has a similar name. Melrose Motors was established August, 1985 under the ownership of Roger Barrenech.

Val Strough Chevrolet was located at 3330 Broadway on Auto Row in Oakland, California. Strough also owned Val Strough Volkswagen at 990 San Pablo Ave,  Albany, California. There was also a Val Strough Chevrolet Mazda location in Antioch, California and a Val Strough Ford Mercury Lincoln location in Seaside, California.

Michael White who started in the car business at his father's dealerships (Gough Chrysler Plymouth and Van Ness Dodge) worked as General sales Manager for Val Strough Chevrolet, Isuzu and Maserati. He recalls Val Strough was a large dealership with a focus on the fleet and lease business. Michael states that fleet sales don't generate much profit for the sales department unless the volume is absolutely massive. A dealership that also gets the service business from the fleet buyer can see some profit for the service and parts department.

Michael remembers a weekend when Val Strough generated large volume sales without relying on fleet sales. Strough hosted a huge credit union sale. 10 large credit unions set up in the Strough showroom after sending out letters to all of their members. On Saturday morning Strough opened for business with a line of people stretched around the block waiting to buy cars. People stood by cars clutching the keys in hand while defending 'their' car from other potential buyers. That weekend Strough sold and delivered over 80 cars. Strough sold over 225 cars retail that month.

Val Strough's son Don Strough took over the family business. The former Strough location was taken over by Honda of Oakland in 2005.
